Thanks for all the replies - must have been something to see before CR gave up on the Mackinaw Branch, both north and south of Wenona Yard. I heard a couple of stories once that PC wanted to relay the line from Detroit to Bay City with welded rail but couldn't scrape up the funds to do it. I'm assuming the Essexville coal and Dow traffic made heavier rail worth the expense, had they found the cash. Also understood N&W inspected the line before abandonment but I'm assuming the light-weight (and battered by now) rail sunk that possibility too.
I wish one could still hear air horns in Oxford and Lake Orion but alas it wasn't to be.
