Narrow Gauge Railroad Split

I was hoping someone here may be able to help answer a question I have about a railroad near me. First off this rail was built in the late 1800s and torn up sometime around 1920, and is approximately 20-30 miles long. The rail starts at a mainline and ends at an old abandoned saw mill, and about halfway to the mill there is a line that splits off. At this junction the line that splits off runs approximately a quarter mile and ends. Why would the rail split like this?. Is there something that this would have been used for? Just something I noticed and made me wonder. Hope I explained this well enough, I can draw a picture if need be.
