They could receive mixed lumber groups (plywood, shingles, 2x4's, etc.) up until that time period. So they'd order lumber from a "mixing center".
After around 1985ish this practice stopped and only carloads of a single type of lumber would be shipped by rail so smaller lumber yards, who don't need a whole carload of a single type of lumber, went to trucks.
