Regarding the steep grade. It's somewhat a non-factor because the loads went downhill and empties uphill. For safe handling you would want to only handle a few cars and have the locomotive on the downhill side. It's probable that a shay would have been used. They are good for such a task. The bigger issue would be exposing the crown sheet. Not something you really want to do on a steam engine. So not only would it be better to have the engine on the downhill side but you really really want the firebox on the downhill side also.
