Some of the steepest grades on an adhesion railroad were in the UP on the Porterfield and Ellis. These rollercoaster grades, called "Loops" were in the neighborhood of 20%. Speeds of 60 MPH were required going down one side, in order to ascend the other. The grades were so well built, that they can still be seen today.
