Re: NS presence in Saginaw / Bay City
I knew an upper management person who worked for PC. Before the entire collapse happened, PC was frantically trying to put enough cash together to rebuild the entire Detroit to Bay City line, for the purpose of having good track to run the coal trains back then, that were tearing up the Owosso-Saginaw track thru Chesaning. Their plan was to install welded rail, shore up bridges, and scrap the little section between Richville and Saginaw. There was no other PC line in Michigan that was garnering more attention to get rebuilt, than this one. Unfortunately, PC couldn't get the money to do it, and, as we all know, the bankruptcy ended PC as we knew it. Had they been able to rebuild this line, I firmly believe Conrail would have kept it. Not to say that they wouldn't have eventually spun it off, but, I can bet that it would still be in operation today. After all, the coal is still going to Bay City, and this is 39 years after the last actual freight train moved over this line.
