Doug, your response outlines pretty well the boundaries of the argument. You state that extra trains have right by direction against other extra trains but then state that the trainorder would always state which train would take siding implying that they only have right by trainorder.
I remember dispatching at a former CN/GTW engineer's model railroad some years ago and putting out an order with the phrase "take siding" to an extra meeting an extra and the resulting mushroom cloud that went up. He clearly believed that extras had right by direction and nothing else needed to be added.
I'm wondering if this varied by road or territory. There seems to be no concensus on what would be considered "standard" practice.
