Conrail took control of the AA when it was formed in 1976. The State of Michigan wanted all the tracks of the AA kept out, but didn't have the ability to purchase them immediately, thus Conrail reluctantly operated the entire line until Michigan Interstate was formed and took control in 1977.
The GTW takeover of the Owosso trackage was something different IIRC. The AA may have sold off the customer access in Owosso as a way of covering the debts, but I don't think it was directly a result of the AA being brought into the fold of Conrail.
What I do know for sure is that was one messed up, but yet very interesting time in railroading.
