I can imagine that the bitterness came in part from some of the concessions they may have been forced into with the conversion over to Conrail. Some of the workers there may have held seniority in Cadillac or further north, and had been forced to move to GR to keep their jobs. I can see where this would make them hostile toward the MIGN folks, and with life in general.
I know here on the GTW we had one fellow who lived in Muskegon, and drove to Battle Creek on a daily basis, because that's the closest terminal he could hold once Muskegon was sold. He wasn't horribly bitter, but having worked for many years in one location, then having your life uprooted like that, can cause one to get grumpy with life.
