Been to the cut and have explored every mile of the RR from both ends. Gets a bit rugged from the Champion side up into the mountains near the cut area. A local Historian published a nice little book (about $9)on the RR and you can get ahold of him at:

Currently I am researching the 9+ mile long wooden tramway that ran from the Morgan Creek furnace to an area north of the dead river basin where a large battery of charcoal kilns where located. Obscure is an understatement on this r of w. I did a 4 mile hike into the woods north of the dead river site into the section where the kilns where located and found bears instead and that abreviated the search for that afternoon!!!
