Looking at Neil's picture, the sidings to the left (or north side) of the depot were the Pennsylvania Railroad's portion of this yard. The PRR line came up the west side of the state from Grand Rapids.
The track occupied by the train was one of about three interchange tracks between the PRR & NYC railroads.
The track curving off to the right was one of about six tracks in New York Central's yard. The NYC came up from Detroit through Bay City, Grayling, Gaylord, & Alpena.
