I was born and raised in St. Johns and watched that line every chance I could for many a year until I moved in 1986. Motive power was primarily:
late 50's through 60's: GP-9, GP-18, F-3A for through freights, and usually an SW-9 for the locals, although a GP did fill in once in a
while. GP's also pulled the remaining passenger trains til the end of service sometime prior to '64.
70's: Road freights were typically GP-9/18 powered as were the locals, but from '77 onward it was quite common to see GP-38's and even SD-40's on the through trains. with the older GP9/18 doing the locals. The D&TSL GP-7's (a set of three) made at least one run on that line as well.
80's: Typically GP-38 or GP'9/18 for the locals. Also, the dynamic brake equipped ex-CV GP'9's also appeared on this line every now and then.
For those who missed it, YES, SD-40's did make some runs on the line.
