Previous to this photo a boxcar had come off the track on Elmira Hill. They drug it past our house and didn’t stop until a kid in a green GMC pickup flagged them down (me), just short of the first switch in Boyne Falls. This shut the railroad down for a couple of weeks while they replace every 4th tie, which made it barely passable. By that time every siding on the railroad was jammed with ferry traffic. The man hanging out the window was watching the rail, as this was one of the first moves over the bandaged track.
The location is looking north, just north of Robbins Siding, about 2 miles south of Boyne Falls. The photo was taken about where the white tank car is in the photo below, which is right across the road from where I grew up. I believe this photo was posted by Mark a while back, so probably one of Neil’s. Guess I should mention the credit.
Not only were the ties Wolmanized, but they were Popular. Most of them turned to power in about 5 years, which is why they had to replace so many ties when the State rehabbed it. I always found it curious that the State was hands off when MIGN was running the place, but as soon as TSBY took over, the State spent millions to rehab the track… This photo was taken in 1989, shortly after the TSBY took over. You can see how quickly those Wolmanized ties disintegrated.
