You and I have the same problem. I am looking at Nikon Coolscan V and 4000 on eBay. They cost $400 and up, but resell well too. My brothers, sisters, and mom will all go in on the purchase of this to save our family treasures.
My dad took hundreds of color slides when he was a pilot with VS-23 in the Korean War. I have reseached several scanners and the Nikon Coolscan uses LEDs to scan the slide, no a hot bulb. Hot incandescant lights can ruin old slides in just a flash from what I have researched. I would go with a Nikon Coolscan. I have yet to buy one, but that is what I am probably going to do here soon. This will also allow other family members to scan their old slides as well. Hopefully this helps you.
