It's still legal in many states, but I really doubt these days that many schools actually employ it. I wonder what the actual use is these days? I suspect like many laws, corporal punishment is still on the books simply because legislators simply haven't bothered to remove them. Legal or not, I would not allow a teacher to lay a hand on a child of mine.
At the same time, I would put a damn fast stop to any disrespectful behavior my child showed towards teachers, principals and others. Removing corporal punishment doesn't mean the kids can't be disciplined.
