I think physical discipline is the wrong way to go about things (of course I say this not actually being a parent myself). But having been a teaching parent, physical discipline was always verboten. Teaching to the behavior was the way we dealt with disciplinary issues (my wife and I worked at a therapeutic foster home while in grad school). Hitting a child is a sign of a bad temper, and teaches a child to fear the person who is supposed to love and care for him/her.
Just my two cents.
