Because people believe everything they read without verifying the facts.
Some guy, who is very well known to hate LJ blew the layoffs out of proportion, saying LJ was sinking and running out of money, etc. Everyone believed it. No one verified with LJ if it was true or not. LJ had a press release, yet no one bothered to read it. Unfortunately, on LJ, there are a lot of "sheep". One person screams "Back up your stuff...LJ is doomed", their friends list follows suit, and reposts it, causing their f-list to do the same, and so on.
You saw my post about it. There's no way they're just going away.
