Even back then you could tell how knowledgeable Favre was about what was going on. He has an image of being this dumb hick who just throws the ball into triple coverage, but the reason he's always been so good is his mastery over the position.
I heard some local bitter sports DJ mocking Favre believing you could talk to Peyton Manning for hours intelligently about the QB position and wondered if you could do the same with Brett. Brett is the smartest QB in football period. Just because he likes to joke and has a Southern drawl doesn't mean you can't be smart too. He wouldn't be the winningest QB in NFL history if he wasn't a mental master of the QB position.
