Shumel, Perhaps at this point it will help if you reframe the question. What can your organization do in terms of grant writing? That is --what investment are you willing to make in terms of time and $ to gain grant resources? Here are two options to decrease the cost of grant seeking using an outside consultant -- (that is maybe you don't need a grant writer, maybe you just need some grant help) One option: After identifying a source, jointly develop a request angle with the consultant. Your staff drafts the grant, the consultant offers advice as needed and review drafts... this provides your staff lots of in-house grant knowledge... Second option: You identify sources and ask the consultant to write a template for the org. for one source. You use the template with the other sources, being sure to personalizing your request for each opportunity... as needed the consultant reviews and helps with questions. Both of these options provide the organization opportunities to increase their skills, obtain funding from grants and have been successful esp. with local requests--which is probably where you want to start anyway. For the record, I never write on the contingency basis.... the organization needs to be VERY invested in the outcome..the relationship between the organization and the funder is critical --in my expereince the fee helps the organization keep this relationship(and grant) on the front burner...
