Karen is right on both counts.
1) Volunteers cannot deduct the value of their volunteer services as a charitable contribution, even for services they provide professionally.
2) Whether your organization can get any sales tax exemption for your purchases depends on the rules of your state. This varies a great deal from state to state, by the way. In California, where I live, nonprofits have to pay sales tax on their purchases, but other states do exempt some nonprofits from paying sales tax. As Carol notes, if your state does grant sales tax exemptions to charities, you might need to apply for it.
