Organizational structure without an Executive DirectorArchived Message

For various reason, our organization has for many years operating with the President and Executive Director acting as the same person. Thankfuly, after many years, this person is stepping down and has already given up their President position.
All of this is good news, except that the new President believes the organization can be runnign without any Executive Director at all. In other words, the heads of each of the departments (we have a small organization with a staff of 6) would report directly to him.
Have any of you worked in a similar structure? Has it worked? I have always had an ED and would prefer to continue to do so.
