You already know how competitive grant funding is. Grantmakers are really looking to minimize their risk. They want assurance that you'll be able to keep your doors open after their grant money is gone. You are competing with organizations that already have longevity, and you might appear to them to be a much larger risk. You need to develop a broadbased group of grassroots donors, and some program fee income so that you can demonstrate that you have the ability to sustain your organization. 80% of your budget should probably be derived locally (private donors, fundraisers, United Way, family foundations). Most grantmakers are looking for no more than 20% of your projected annual income as 'pending grants.' I have a tutorial I'd be happy to share with you that was done for a grantmaker association to help them determine what 'start-up' organizations to award grants to. It might help you to look at your organization like a foundation would. Just email me if interested.
