Professional development - Is it excessive?Archived Message

The AFP's International Conference on Fundraising "is the largest annual educational offering in the world," according to the event's registration and information pamphlet. This raises an interesting question, at least in my mind: Why are fundraisers so thirsty for professional development? It seems like there are more conferences, seminars, and courses for this profession than any other I know of. Yet, to me, fundraising is a fairly simple concept to grasp (see previous post about fundraising being "easy"). Do we really NEED all of this professional development? There's obviously a demand for it, otherwise such events wouldn't be successful. But is at least some--perhaps most--of the demand artificial?
