I may be on the unpopular side of the fence on this one, but I see nothing wrong with it. I have gotten grants from organizations that had never heard of us before, simply by sending a blind letter or proposal that fit their guidelines. Also, I went to a seminar recently that was taught by a wonderful woman in our local philanthropic community who has several prominent positions on both sides of grants (writing and funding). I specifically asked her how important it was to cultivate these relationships, and she said (at least in our area, which is a major metropolitan area) that in general it isn't necessary, and that the industry has really overinflated the importance of it. Just my two cents from my own experience. I'll prepare myself for the backlash now!
