You should definitely ask for client references and make some calls before you recommend a consultant to your Board. Most grantwriters have clients that are happy to give a referral and a frank accessment of their satisfaction with the process and outcomes. You want to choose the firm you hire with care, as the learning curve is steep until a consultant is sufficiently familiar with your organization to make a strong case statement in your behalf. My firm looks for long-term relationships with clients because of this. You don't want to keep starting over, teaching one consultant after the next about your organization. Most grantwriters also do foundation research and will suggest what grantmakers to approach and how much money should to be requested of each foundation, as well as investigating your organization's grant ideas. The process is very collaborative and you should plan on allowing considerable staff time to be intimately involved in the process.
