After reading through the numerous postings in response to your query, it could be the purpose you are seeking the information which causes the lack of response. Paying clients. What type of service(s) do you wish to supply? There are certainly simple ways to get the information should you take the route of direct mail. A local printer can buy a list for a fairly reasonable price if you give them the parameters you are seeking. So, yes, lists exist.
I have found one of the very best way to enter the network of nonprofit leaders is to attend their meetings. There are several collaborations and I'm certain that Chicago is not void of them. There will be a homeless provider network, a hospital and healthcare network, and many more. The United Way keeps excellent records for their Live United Campaign which places volunteers into each agency's hands. They may also maintain a directory.
Cold calling agencies is one of the least productive routes to new business. It sounds like you need referrals more than just names of organizations at this point? Those you have helped (be it a volunteer position or through an educational internship) should be able to provide referrals to other organizations within their sphere of influence. Let your experience work for you in this. If your portfolio of experience is slim or you are new to the Chicago area, then direct volunteerism in a high profile nonprofit in your area of interest will go a long way towards securing that client and/or landing valuable referrals.
