have you checked Guidestar at www.guidestar.org? It's a free on-line database of non-profit organizations that includes access to their 990s. You can have access to more information with a paid membership, but I just use the free membership. I find it very helpful when researching non-profits.
You may also check and see if there is a county-wide Information and Referral Service. They often provide written directories or searchable databases of local non-profits (along with other services like refeerals to food pantries, etc).
