Julie: Well said. Compelling, and true. Our orchestra did a great deal more than perform for ticket buyers. I have over the years been dismayed by the claims made on both sides of most legislative aisles that arts & culture are only for the rich. Sure, poor people need food and shelter, but they also need arts & culture--as you so elegantly and accurately stated. Some in Congress have talked about arranging non-profits in tiers, restricting what is deemed to be charitable, and what is not. Sort of like the government, once again, picking the winners and losers instead of letting Americans make their charitable choices themselves. I do not know of any practical way to define whether a specific grant benefits the poor. A grant for food surely would, but I would argue that a grant to the arts also benefits the poor--as I attempted to prove in my article.
