Thanks so much, Tony - I was hoping I might get some of your wisdom on this issue. I've been feeling uneasy about having this small organization spend so much money on a tool that I have only seen fail in other organizations (it was their idea to begin with, so I have been supporting it, but realizing quickly that they are not ready for it.)
I did not conduct a rating session per se with the ED - rather, it was a first session for me to get a feeling both of the donor base and of her knowledge and ability to wrap her mind around who the donors are. I appreciate your recommendation to host some rating sessions, which is what I think I will suggest we do next.
And at least one of the screening services offers a free trial - I will use that as well to see what comes out of it.
I find this to be one of the two most challenging areas in individual fundraising work - mining your own database for "gold" and identifying new prospects.
