| Re: Registering as a Grant Writer in New York State

In Pennsylvania it takes about 2 weeks after the regulating body receives your check and application form before you get the certificate authorizing you as a registered Fund Development Consultant. In PA the annual registration fee is $250, as long as you don't do anything to kick you into the category of Fund Development SOLICITOR, in which case the annual fee doubles and you have the added expense of having to get bonded. (Examples of things that might kick you into the 'solicitor' category: performance-based fees, direct handling of donor money, any fundraising 'event' involvement). I know this isn't what you want to hear, but a knowledgeable nonprofit (the kind you will want as a client, poised to be successful with a grants camapign) will NOT contract with any grantwriter not in compliance with the regulating body. The nonprofit is open to being fined (at least here in PA)l and so are YOU for being out of compliance. Most state regulating bodies don't have the manpower to REALLY police compliance. But if were on a nonprofit board of directors, I would NEVER agree to signing with a consultant who was not duly registered. Think of it as a competitive advantage, since you can say to the search committee of a prospective client, "If you decide to hire a different consultant, please ask them for their registration number with the State Attorney General's office, as you could be fined for contracting with an unregistered grantwriter." You'll find that a lot of the competition falls away, since compliance with the law "separates the men from the boys" in this field, the amateurs from the pros.
