| Registering as a Grant Writer in New York State
Posted by pollyingrid on 6/14/2011, 12:44 pm
Hello everyone, I am new to the board and equally new to the world of philanthropy. I am in the earliest stages of trying to transition to a career in freelance grant writing. I just learned that I need to register with the State Attorney General's site for fundraising professionals before I can enter into any remunerated contracts. This is somewhat of a rock and a hard place, though, considering the fact that the registration fee is an unbelievable $800 a year (I'm still in shock ... it costs me $350 for every 2 years to be licensed as an attorney in this state, but I digress ...) I'm reaching out to all of you to try to get a better handle on the logistics of how to proceed. Apparently I can volunteer my time all I want without registering, which is fine, as I need the experience. But at some point in the not-too-distant future, I will want to enter into remunerated contracts. So here are my specific questions for those in the know: 1) How long does it take to be officially registered from the moment you send in your check and fill out the forms? 2) Building on that last question, can I solicit paid contracts and then as soon as I'm about to sign one, send off my registration materials? I think you can see where I'm going here. I simply CANNOT AFFORD to mail off an $800 check and then just cross my fingers that some deal will come through without something secure on the horizon. Looking forward to your feedback!
