My first job in development was with my alma mater, a major Chicago university, directing its parents' annual giving program. I learned the art of grant writing by reading the successful proposals of grant writers on staff. You might consider volunteering to write grant proposals for Truman College, gaining a track record along with a valuable reference you can use on your resume.
