    Have you considered being a grant-writing volunteer for a season? Regardless of your certification, what a potential employer or contract client will want to know is that your skills have been tested, proven and (hopefully) resulted in some level of success regarding positive funding.

    This is the method I used to enter the field. I found a nonprofit whose programs I was passionate about, volunteered to help their development efforts by writing grants (they had no experience in this aspect of fundraising), and jumped in. The result was I learned quite a bit, they received some dollars, and I had a much keener awareness of what I needed to be doing to be successful.

    I hold membership in the Association of Fundraising Professionals because my expertise is now broader than grants alone; however, I have heard good comments about both of the organizations you have mentioned.
