How Do You Keep A Fund-Raising Campaign On Track?

When it comes to raising money in support of our good and worthy causes, it seems logical at the time to think in terms of where the money is to be found, how much money can be gotten, how soon can we get it, and how are the best ways to ask for the money. What else is there?

Thinking about this process, I recalled many fund-raising campaigns where little, if anything, followed the asking for the money regarding campaign progress reporting. Such reporting was at best usually faulty, and at worst, practically nonexistent.

Campaign volunteers who are looking to know how their efforts are being reported, often receive vague answers from campaign management, such as, “We’re doing OK,” or “We’re looking like we are on track,” etc. The worst such comment I have heard was, “We’ll know when the books are closed.” Knowing after the books are closed, whether the campaign met its goal or not, is of no real use during the campaign’s duration. For one thing, you can’t fix a problem in a campaign unless you know there is a problem. On the other hand, neither can you keep the fund-raising team energized and encouraged to keep up the good work. The campaign is operating in a vacuum.

Under these circumstances, more often than not, I have found that an organization’s leadership was not so much unwilling to keep their campaign team informed of the campaign’s’ progress, as much as the leadership was unable to do so for a variety of reasons, the chief one being that they did not know how.

So, how do you keep a fund-raising campaign on track? By being well organized, constantly monitoring progress, and informing all campaign participants of that progress.

I thought some of you campaigners might find some use of an article just posted on my website on the topic---especially if your Fiscal Year and Annual Fund Campaign ends on June 30, or other midyear date. Others may find some use of the material to be better prepared for campaign progress reporting for campaigns ending on December 31. You will learn about:

    -- Conducting the meeting
    -- The best meeting “climate”
-- Midcourse corrections and problem solving
-- Never cancel, nor ever put off the campaign for any reason
-- Tracking gifts and collecting the money
    -- Acknowledgments to donors
-- Announcing results and saying thank you to volunteers
-- Campaign assessment and review for the next campaign
-- The key to running a good campaign
