What you charge for the 6 months of work will depend on what volume of work you will do during those 6 months. It is also difficult for me to know how fast you are. I've had newer writers start working for me where it takes them 5 times longer (more!) to prepare a grant proposal than it does for me to do the same work. That's another reason why I like a flat fee for a specified body of work. Why should the client pay for any fumbling or uncertainty on our end that results in the work taking longer than it should; and on the other hand, why should an experienced talented writer be penalized because the perfect case for support comes to them very quickly in the first draft? If you plan to be a "one-man shop", then you really only have so many hours to sell each month. If you plan to have 4 clients, each one needs to support 25% of your billable hours. If you plan to have 10 clients concurrently, each will need to pay enough to support 10% of your billable hours each month. Maybe that will help you do some math on this. You must keep in mind that you will be paying taxes on your earned income and that you will have the annual expense of foundation databases, registration fees, long-distance & internet charges, printer ink & copy paper, replacement of computers & label printers, etc. that must all be factored into your fee.
