Funders who don't like when you know who they fund

Posted by lbalpert on 5/3/2011, 12:25 pm

I had an odd conversation with a potential funder, who I spoke to for the first time today. Usually, when I mention close connections to organizations that a funder has previously funded, such as the fact that I used to work for the funded organization, contributes to a positive conversation. However, the person I spoke to today said "I suppose you can find that information if you dig deeply enough..." and "...our trustees prefer to remain anonymous, and their giving to be anonymous." Guess he's not a fan of The Foundation Center! :-) He confirmed that he receives the requests for this foundation.

He did encourage me to submit a letter, which they accept in lieu of a formal proposal. In the letter I prepare for my CEO's signature, should I mention something innocuous like, "Thank you for the time you took to speak with us about your proposal," and leave it at that?
