I will add to Linda's note that volunteers can and do make great additions to fundraising and development efforts. I began my career in grant seeking and development as an avid volunteer for an organization I absolutely love(d) and still do. Now I am on the board of this organization. So keep that aspect in mind as well. Board Members that have been cultivated through on-hand experience know the organization inside and out, typically have relationship with the staff at some level, and can competently speak about the history, vision and values to anyone they meet! The difference being that in my case, the idea was my suggestion, absolutely no interest or understanding of grants nor grant seeking was in place, and I pretty much had free-reign to research, phone, write, ask for help reviewing and send things off. The first positive grant award was exhilarating and made the organization sit up and take me seriously. You are way ahead of that curve, so congratulations. I would note that passionate volunteers are an asset to any organization. Recognizing skills and utilizing them will certainly secure their long-term relationship with your cause.
