It would be understandable, though not realistic, were you to be so infuriated, so frustrated, with the stark and outrageous facts surrounding the errant non-profit, that you would slip into a similar broad brush opinion or concern regarding non-profits in general. I have far more faith in the humanitarian spirit which drives non-profits, especially in times of stress and greater need. I see no such thing as "it's worse than ever," or any evidence that this one singular, distant, anonymous, organization, somehow pollutes the philanthropic atmosphere. Far from it, from what I see daily with non-profits by the dozen. I suggest you resolve the issue with the rogue non-profit as soon as you can, directly to it with an aggressive opposition, or personally with your own mind settling to what you cannot/will not control and get on with other things. It is possible that the anger and inability to report/correct the ills there, have pervaded and directed your thinking elsewhere in the non-profit world in a negative fashion. Telling us all about the situation in agonizing detail, is one thing, since It is obvious that the actions there are egregious, even perhaps, criminal. Now, it is up to you to do something about it via anonymous/signed letters to: - media, - state Attorney General, - a key grantor, - other grantors, - selected board members. Perhaps there is at least one non-family member staffperson who has had enough of the nonsense. Not wanting to be a “whistle blower” yourself because you do not want to make life miserable for non-family staff members, only serves to keep them miserable longer. And they will be miserable anyway should anyone else step up and do the right thing right now. But, do something, because it appears it is doing something to you, perhaps allowing disillusionment and suspicious opinions where there were none before. In your earlier posting (May 6), you said the situation was making you cynical. Work to fix that one bad situation, and the cynicism will surely go away.
