| Re: Federal grants training recommendations

Dear J. Martin, I have not attended the training you note. That said, most federal agencies hold trainings ahead of time regarding applying. Some are held in D.C., others (more and more) are being held via conference call with power-point slides for those who are interested in a specific application. The most effective training on Federal Grant applications you could do would be to request copies of successful applications via the Freedom of Information Act. If you are desiring to apply for a certain funding stream, you can go to that agency's website, view a list of successful grantees for the past year, note the application number, and then request a copy via email. The benefit is that you will have a copy available of the actual RFP they applied under, and a successful application for that round of funding. The major drawback is length of time from request for copies until they send--typically about 4 months. The best advice I can provide for applying is to follow the directions very carefully. They provide (on average) 36-40 pages of instructions. Read them at least twice before tackling! Make sure that you understand what is meant by the words Objectives, Goals, and Activities and how they are very different from one another. Write your proposal with evaluation of your program/project in mind throughout the whole and you will score better. If you have any specific questions I can answer, I would be happy to do so. Best wishes...
