    Ageism and Philanthropy

Posted by timful on 2/15/2010, 11:36 am

A recent posting by a New York City-based organization in the Philanthropy News Digest Arts and Culture RFP area solicits applicants to one of its programs, stating that:

The fellowship program will support nine individual artists in New York City between the ages of 22 and 38 who are working in the visual arts, music, and performing arts and who want to develop a new project with a Jewish focus, theme, or element.

This is an ageist advertisement, and it has no place in the public announcements of the Foundation Center, or any other non-profit organization. In order to prevent litigation being initiated against it on discriminatory grounds, The Foundation Center should remove the posting immediately.

I would be interested to know if readers of this forum have encountered other postings that discriminate against artists on the basis of age.

    Thanks.
