Tony, I believe you and I are on the same page here, although we took two different approaches. Yours was the far more personal, as you have been in these shoes before. Nonprofit governance can at times be an absolute joy, and at others can resemble a theatrical drama with a full cast of characters, from heroines to villains. In the former, the board and staff tend to be very focused on mission, vision and values; while in the latter, they are too often focused on central leadership personalities and public recognition. (Just personal insight from years of serving on Boards). In the case in question, my answer focused solely on those who had already given to the organization. Over the course of years noted in the post, there is great potential that these parties in question had donated not just once, but several consecutive years. They are established donors to the organization. In the case of prospects, as you address, if their only connection is this disgruntled board member, you are absolutely correct. They are best to let those go...there is no solid history of donor connectivity to address.
