Are Charter Public Schools considered government units/donations tax deductible

Posted by curious john on 10/23/2009, 2:52 pm

From my understanding regular public schools are run by a school board, a government unit so contributions to them are tax deductible.

Charter Public Schools receive government funding, probably have to report to the school board, but they are usually operated by people outside the school board's control i.e. a 501c3 non profit.

A charter school wants money but they don't have a 501c3 non-profit. Are charter schools considered government units? Will a donation to this school be tax deductible?
