A few thoughts... --Consider approaching another organization about fiscal sponsorship and skip the 501(c)(3) application altogether. You can solicit grant funds using the Sponsor's tax-exempt status. The arrangement also gives you time to build credibility while being "incubated" by another organization, making it easier to secure grant funding after you get your own 501(c)(3) status. This also is a good start at showing existing community/financial support as Linda suggests. There are ton of resources on the Internet that will tell you how to form a partnership like this. ---Ask the grant writer if she'd consider donating her services now as an in-kind contribution, and if she would be interested in possibly spearheading a sustainability initiative pending grant funding. Embed the sustainability component in the grant as part of the overall project. The component could include hiring a consultant to develop a long term fundraising strategy for your NPO, write reusable verbiage for use in case statements, grant narratives, and marketing materials.
