| Re: Board members' information

Hello Ruth: I firmly believe that we should share the information requested if we expect grantors to share their money with us. Apart from the relatively few anonymous donors we may have giving to our organization, all of our other donors are listed anyway in our Annual Reports under respective donation levels. Such very public listings are far removed from the close and private business use any grantor will have to simply allow them to know of the scope of our other support---which must always begin with our Board of Trustees. Grantors want the names and amounts only for our credibility’s sake and for their own confidence when they give us money---to know others endorse what we are doing, again, with our Board leading the way. The only instance in which we would not supply the name of a donor is when he or she, the foundation or the corporation, request anonymity. In those cases, we can let a prospective grantor know that supplying such information is out of our control. It is not that we will not, but it is that we cannot. And the grantors will understand. They always have. I would never submit such information using pseudonyms, or any other ways to deflect what we are asked. It could very well come off as being seen as distrust of their motives, and disregard for what they think is an important component to the grant-seeking process. I have always found that our donors were only too happy to be part of a practice which could possibly bring in even more money to support the organization they favored with their own gifts. The Board of Trustees should have even more satisfaction with the example they set which could have such positive results. And, there is nothing sacred nor secret about where they work, or their profession. That is how I have always responded to such requests.
