    Hello Jane,

While philanthropic support for staff training may not be as prevalent as support for other nonprofit operations, this funding does exist. Recent studies have investigated the level of support for nonprofit "overhead" activities:

-Paying For Overhead: A Study of the Impact of Foundations’ Overhead Payment Policies on Educational and Human Service Organizations
    (http://www.philanthropy.iupui.edu/Research/WorkingPapers/PayingforOverhead.pdf)
This study from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University analyzes the funding landscape for support of nonprofit overhead costs.
Table 1.2 on page 22, as well as Figure 1.1 on page 26 highlight specifically the allocation of grant funding for staff training as an HR expense.

-The Foundation Center's Grants Statistics by Type of Support section (http://foundationcenter.org/findfunders/statistics/gs_support.html) highlights the amount and percentage of grant money allocated for various types of support. Specifically, in the PDF document, "Types of Support Awarded by Foundations, circa 2007" (http://foundationcenter.org/findfunders/statistics/pdf/07_fund_tos/2007/15_07.pdf) under the heading "General Operating Support", find the subheading "Management development", which shows that 2.3% of all grants reported in the sample were allocated for this specific type of support.

Management development/capacity building is defined as "grants to organizations for salaries, staff support, staff training, strategic or long-range planning, capacity building, budgeting, or accounting." This joint term would be an excellent keyword to select from the Types of Support index field in Foundation Directory Online when you are searching for funding for your staff training program.

Additional Type of Support keywords I would recommend would be:

-General/operating support: Grants to organizations for day-to-day operating costs or to further the general purpose or work of an organization, rather than for a specific purpose or project. Also referred to as unrestricted grants. *While broad in scope, using this keyword will help you locate grantmakers who have stated an interest in funding the general operations of the nonprofit, under which staff training is likely to fall.

-Conferences/seminars: Grants to organizations to cover the expenses of holding a conference, seminar, or workshop.

I hope this information helps answer your question. If you have other questions about fundraising, grantseeking or nonprofit management, I encourage you to chat with or email a Foundation Center librarian directly, at this link (http://foundationcenter.org/getstarted/askus/).

    Thanks,
    Katie A.
