    Re: Presenting grant writer services

Actually, they really have no idea what the benefits are that you speak of. Countless E.D's have already tried and failed to go after grants, and so their idea of a grant is very skewed: been there, done that; didn't get it, waste of time. And sure enough, they go back to the old grind of standard fund raising ideas: youth car washes, Nelson's Golden Glow chicken in the Wal-mart parking lot, snag a rich donor, etc.

I live in Elkhart County, IN, one of the worst hit counties in the country. All an E.D. sees here is the outlay to pay for services rendered. Game over when they hear that they might actually have to pay for the services without the commission or the contingency agreement.

I've decided that it might be game over for me as well by the way. I did the grant writing gig after I was asked by a local prisoner reentry ministry to write them a grant. I told them I could since I was unemployed at the time, and decided maybe grant writing might be an alternative to nothing, so tried to start my own business for local nonprofits. Lots of heartache, not a lot of serious inquiries. As you know, the way to get into grant writing is to get into a local nonprofit and gain experience and something of a reputation. But since I didn't go that route, trying to freelance from the start is very difficult, especially in the current economic climate.
