another thought inspired by Tony's response...

It would be a rare nonprofit that could respond immediately with a commitment, no matter how much they liked your presentation. Nonprofit staff usually have to take it to their Finance or Fundraising Committee, who then have to present their recommendation to the Governing Board for official action. Then, even after Board approval, your fee often needs to be lined into the next annual budget, which means you'll be waiting until the start of their fiscal year before the deal is 'closed.' Although some larger nonprofits have staff that are authorized to contract with outsourced service providers, most still have a fairly lengthy process for any new substantial spending. I never generate or make 'sales presentations' anymore, finding it much more productive to meet potential new clients at trade-specific conferences and then cultivate these 'prospects' via internet/email-based relationship building. But I find that being generous with what I know has paid off more than anything. I often give away what other consultants are charging a fee to provide. People remember when you do them a kindness, and then trust you enough to hire you when they need a grantwriter and to refer you to their friends.
