I was recently referred to an organization as a grants consutant (a first time for as an independent contractor). Before they will talk to me they want me to fill out a form indicating the foundations and corporations I've worked with, the amounts raised, the dates of the awards, and the names of the organizations for which the amounts were raised. Providing this level of information seems to me like a breach of trust with prior employers, even though I've never been asked to sign a contract not to reveal sources and amounts of funding. Am I right in feeling uncomfortable?
I've also reviewed AFP's ethical guidelines and their Donor Bill of Rights stipulates that donors have the right to be assured that the information about their donation is handled with confidentiality. I'm assuming that they mean both individual and institutional donors.
I like the organization I've been referred to and would like to help them. It is young (in terms of staff and years in operation), but fills a needed nitch in the community it serves.
Am I right in thinking that what they are asking is unethical? I am thinking of telling them the highest amount ever raised from one donor (without naming that donor) and then listing all the foundations and corporations I've raised funds from. Is there another way to demonstrate success rates?
