It is really rare that I am asked to provide a writing sample, but it has happened 2 or 3 times to me over the last 7 years. I give grantwriting workshops for our state association of nonprofit organizations, so I have 'sample' fake proposals created as a part of my workshop handouts. That's what I've used for those rare instances when asked to provide a 'writing sample'. (Most of my clients come from referrals, and rarely from responses to RFPs.) My contracts clearly assign intellectual property rights to my clients for all work created in collaboration with us for their benefit, and include confidentiality agreements.
