    Hi Julie,

In case Number One, I do not offer and do not give/loan copies of grants to anyone who is NOT seeking a sample of my professional writing. I have, however, found that a department of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was circulating one of my proposals as a model to be followed when applying for funds from a specific program.

I do not sell, give, or loan proposals to organizations with whom I am not engaged for the same reasons you offered; but, also because it's silly. Such a practice is to say that the value of a grant writer is to write the words of a grant and that a funder will award money to any proposal written with the "magic words." We both know nothing could be farther from the truth.

In Case Two, I submit samples of my work all the time. Before I submit a grant, however, I black out or blank out the name and private information of my client. Better yet, I have also devised a "fake" grant. A grant I developed for a client that was not used but that showed a certain level of writing. Unless specifically asked for a "current" or "successful" proposal, I send my "fake" proposal along as a sample of my writing.

At other times, I'll use a published article as a sample of my writing. If the client merely wants to see if I'm acquainted with the English language, any type of sample will do.

Thanks for the question. Other folks must be off writing grants.

    Best,

    Carl
